Staycation is Over Starting Tomorrow Morning
With no breaks from work for the last three years, it is time to go somewhere!
Any writer worth his salt knows that no matter what he/she writes, they must answer the “Ws” to make the article worthy of publication. They are often known as the “reporter” questions — who, what, when, where, why — and nowadays “how” is usually included for good measure.
In today’s world, as it relates to going on a vacation that requires flight, I will offer a variance to those questions. We need to add “will” to those questions: Will my flight be on time, or will it be canceled at the last moment?”
Projecting forward to tomorrow, let me set the scene for you:
Most of our family members have not had a vacation for the past three years due to Covid restrictions and other unforeseen circumstances. That left us to scrounge around for things to do closer to home. Those we were able to find were not very thrilling — at least, not to two eleven-years-old and a sixteen-year-old who is being a typical teenager, not at all interested in participating in whatever event was planned.
Tomorrow, that all changes for good. You see, we’ve been invited by our friends to join them for a week of fun in the sun at Sanibel, Florida. We leaped at the opportunity to go somewhere, anywhere, not called “home.”
The planning for the trip started last month. All we had to do was figure out how to get there. Our home in Indiana is 1,035 miles from Sanibel Island, which is 14 hours south by car. Consequently, driving is not an option due to time restraints. That leaves flying as our only option.
My wife is skittish about flying anywhere because of Covid and safety concerns. To accommodate her fears, we decided to fly directly to Sanibel with no stops, no switching planes, and as few inconveniences as possible.
As it turns out, the only direct flight going to our destination is a flight leaving out of the airport in Indianapolis, which is 1 1/2 hours north of us. So, tomorrow we are all piling into their 8-passenger SUV and driving to Indy to take that…
